Zhao, Xiaping. “The Micro-Process of Shareholder Activism: Examining the Framing and Presenting Tactics.” Working paper (University of Pittsburgh), 2015.

Fom the author’s abstract: “Previous studies document that shareholder social activism represents a major mechanism through which SRI funds try to pursue their social agendas. However, few studies have explored the micro-processes of shareholder social activism. To address this research gap, this study tries to explore the micro-processes of shareholder social activism. Based on a qualitative analysis on 1,621 shareholder social proposals, I identify six framing tactics that are used by the proponents to linguistically frame the contents of their proposals and two present tactics used by the proponents to present their proposals to the audiences. Subsequently, a quantitative analysis demonstrates that all tactics, except for one, are likely to influence audiences’ acceptance for shareholder social activism. Implications to research and practices are discussed.”
